Help Me Get Through Today!

Help Me Through Today

If you’re at all like me, you might often need help to get through the day. Any myriad of reasons can pound down on us, nag at us, or overwhelm us.  Often, it’s simply that we want to give each day our best effort. I need heavenly help to get me through the day. Here’s a great prayer – and a funny one- that I found years ago [though I don’t know who to attribute it to].  You might like it as much as I do:

Dear God,

So far today I haven’t done anything wrong. I haven’t gossiped; I haven’t lost my temper. I haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent.

But I’m gonna be getting out of bed in a minute, and I’m probably going to need a lot more help.

Amen

Attitude is everything. Once I reeeaaally saw the forest for the trees, and began to figure out that God really is in the details – including all the details of my daily living – it occurred to me that the only thing I can give Him is my will. The rest of it? It belongs to Him, anyway.

Find the Good Things

The little annoyances that used to drag me under? They don’t do that anymore. At least, not so often. It seems easier to find good things.

I found a few simple ways to cut through the thicket of bad habits and keep looking up. You know, UP. Knowing that our Father in Heaven is aware of me.

Here are three simple boosts for turning to God, knowing we need all the help we can get:

1.  Recognize I can’t do it myself.  Young children go through periods of “I can do it by myself.” Good for them- it helps with their growth and independence. As adults, though, if we still carry that attitude, we can paint ourselves into a corner.

I appreciate the adage that tells us we need to work like everything depends on us, but pray as if everything depends on God. No matter how much we do by ourselves, we need heavenly input. I do, if I want things to go better, happier, and simpler.

2. Get rid of any self entitlement.

There was a nine year old boy who announced to his parents at breakfast one morning:  I am running away from home tomorrow. Who is going to drive me?

Ha! I can see this in my mind’s eye. And it’s cute. It’s not so cute, though, when adults act this way. Once we realize the world doesn’t revolve around us, we can appreciate the ups and the downs of daily life. And when we want to run away, simply because we’re upset, we can look upward and find a bit of that peace to settle our heart.

3.  Remember we get daily pop quizzes in life. Not one big final exam.

Knowing that every day, when I get out of bed, each decision will impact the rest of my day [and far beyond the day’s choices], I see that we don’t sink or swim by one or two decisions. Here is a quote I’ve found helpful:

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

I recognize there are exceptions – good and bad- to the three points I’ve listed. And I honor and appreciate that only one extremely bad choice can ruin lives. And one exceptionally good choice can grant goodness to ourselves and many others.

Good Day To Turn Life Around

But for most of us, knowing we can offer a little prayer to help us get through the day is a good thing. And, knowing it, we can pass most of those daily quizzes.  The best thing? We can choose- every day- to make it A Good Day. That’s a good thing.

And goodness matters!

Unless you live in an area of the world where there are no seasons, we hope you'll enjoy a few pictures of Autumn- a time of preparation for Mother Nature resting, of gathering the last of crops, of the array of colors that only autumn cal bring us. Mother Nature is GOOD! (Well... except for those scary & difficult storms, etc that make their way to locations where some of you live. God bless you!) ... See MoreSee Less
