I love good ol’ lighthouses.
I love all they represent, and how they make me feel.
What a blessing they’ve been to many seafaring souls. [And non-seafaring ones, like me, who simply appreciate them standing there, shining.]
One of my favorite old songs is one written by Donna Fargo. The chorus and first verse go like this:
You Can’t Be a Beacon
You can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.
You can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.
There’s a little light in all of us by God’s design,
But you can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.
How can you ask for the truth When you do not truthful live?
How can you ask forgiveness When you don’t forgive?
I don’t mean to bring you down or speak to you unkind,
But you can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.
This is one of those ‘sermons in a song.’ And it’s right on target. Whatever we’re able to shine about, it helps us while it helps some other soul out there, in our purview.
The New Testament speaks to the importance of letting our light shine, too. Jesus Christ spoke these words in Matthew:
And he said unto them, “Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not to be set on a candlestick?”
There’s never been a better time to let our light shine. In whatever ways we are able, we can be our very own version of a good ol’ lighthouse. And we don’t have to chase around after everybody….we just need to hang out and shine. Today! In any way we can. The dividends are awesome and heartwarming. For the ones shining as well as the ones who receive that light.
What a great way to live, huh?!

Oh my goodness, I am so grateful to have you write! Lyrics online were credited to the singer. My huge apologies to you, Marty. Especially as a writer myself, I ‘get’ it when we’re not properly credited. THANK YOU For writing this song — I’ll write blog post about this soon…. figuring out the best way to teach a valuable lesson re: going the extra few miles to make sure we give credit where it’s due.
Many thanks and God bless!
