Good Ideas, Keen Minds, and Harnessing Power

Hard times often bring out the best in people. When you gather a few girls with good ideas, keen minds, and imagination — You figure ways of harnessing power in unique ways.  This is such a cool piece of news!

What these girls did, after Superstorm Sandy ripped New Jersey, New York, and so much of the Eastern seaboard of the USA apart, is amazing.  Weird. Out of the box thinking. And really good!

This information came from a site called good.is.  Check this out …

Small Things With Great Love in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Small Things With Great Love in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Unless you are living in a cave or a yurt in the mountains, you have heard of the devastation caused by the monstrous Hurricane Sandy.

But, you may not have heard of the beauty amidst such devastation.

At times like these, there are some that do great, heroic deeds–and then there are the many who, like Mother Teresa once said, recognize that while they cannot do great things, they can do “small things with great love.”

Here are a few:

This New Yorker has rigged …

by Vickey Pahnke Taylor September 6, 2012
It's Smart To Be Optimistic!

Apparently, it’s smart to be optimistic.

We all know that optimism is a good thing. But I found a really good article in Reader’s Digest that shed some additional light on why it’s so smart to be a sunny-side-up kind of person.

Optimistic people are healthier, according to this October 2010 article. They exercise more and are more apt to follow a better diet. They pay more attention to good habits.

The article explained that there’s a difference in happiness and optimism:

Another Bridge Was Built

Another Bridge Was Built

Another bridge was built.

A female Episcopal priest recently visited a Mormon temple. And wrote about it for the Huff Post Internet newspaper. It brought joy to my heart. Ya know why? Because it wasn’t controversial. It didn’t seek to harm, to inflame, or to dismiss. She didn’t write about it as a controversial topic to draw more viewers.

It was written by a lady who went with curiosity, and who was not afraid to ask hard questions. She left a friend of the LDS …

by Vickey Pahnke Taylor May 20, 2012
Quotes Can Calm My Soul

Quotes can calm my soul. Sometimes they come straight from the scriptures. Other times, they come from  ecclesiastical leaders, or other inspired, thoughtful people.

Peace has come during a time of troubling storm,  an extra kick of hope has kept me going, or a happy sentence or two has brought a spark of joy and insight – at precisely the right time.

President Gordon B. Hinckley’s advice has on many occasions been just what I needed. Here’s one of his thoughts  I try to keep …

My Apologies

by Vickey Pahnke Taylor May 14, 2012
My Apologies

My apologies sometimes seem sufficient, and sometimes -not so much. For the record, I’ve not apologized as many times as I’ve needed to. And I’ve often wished I could do more to correct a wrong assumption or cross word, or poor choice. It feels so good when we build the bridges and fill in gaps where feelings have been hurt or credit has not been properly given.

I have learned that what’s in the past is — in the past.   I have today …

Of May Day and Yesterdays

Of May Day and Yesterdays

Today is May Day. Makes me think of the yesterdays when May Day was full of traditions and fun. Some of you probably don’t even know there were Big Goings On back ‘in the May Day’….. just reminds me of how many May Days I’ve seen. Kind of a lot.

So many memories to draw on. One May Day, we were living in Kauai and I got to be the leader of the May Pole dance. Ribbons were tied to a flag pole and there …
